About Durham City Centre.

Durham City is a beautiful cathedral city, less than three hours by train from London and close to two international airports; Newcastle International and Durham Tees Valley. The famous Cathedral and Castle not only dominate the skyline, but they have also been designated a World Heritage site, putting Durham in the same league as the Pyramids and the Great Wall of China.

With tourists travelling to Durham from all over the world every year, there's no doubt that ours is a beautiful city - but if you spend three or four years here, what else is there to do? As well as a spectacular free view and an amazing heritage, the city has a lively mixture of bars, clubs, shopping, exhibitions, music, dance and drama. Durham has everything you need to enjoy the best years of your life.

The best of both worlds
Durham's location - in the heart of North East England - means you've got some other great cities on your doorstep. We're only 15 minutes from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and one hour from historic York - and the nearby MetroCentre in Gateshead is one of the biggest shopping centres in Europe.

The city of Durham is spectacular, but small and easy to walk around. Within minutes, you can escape by taking a path down to the leafy banks of the River Wear. You can watch the wildlife, hire a rowing boat, or take the Prince Bishop river cruiser. Looking further afield, the beautiful County Durham coastline is just a stone's throw away.

Nightlife
There's always something happening in Durham. We've plenty of fashionable bars and restaurants, as well as more traditional pubs with a friendly welcome. And at closing time, you can hit the clubs - with regular student offers and special nights that will keep you coming back for more. Newcastle's nightlife scene is hugely popular, and getting back to Durham isn't a problem, with trains running throughout the evening and into the night.

Arts and leisure
Many of our students are actively involved in drama, music and art, both in their colleges and in University societies. The Durham University Concert Series, Musicon, showcases student talent and has a wide programme of visiting musicians, while the Durham Cathedral Choir appears in cathedral concerts and tours regularly.

Around Durham City
In Durham City, the Gala Theatre's Comedy Store nights bring in big name comics from the stand-up scene. The theatre also offers drama, large format cinema, musicals, and music nights. Just down the road, Newcastle's Theatre Royal puts on a range of productions and hosts the Royal Shakespeare Company. The University has a Sketch Group called Durham Revue that produces a brand new show each term which is compered by a comic. The best material from these shows goes onto the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which the group have attended for the last 17 years. Please see www.durhamrevue.com

Across the river from Newcastle, Gateshead has no shortage of culture with the Baltic, a major international centre for contemporary art, and the Sage, a spectacular new venue for a range of live music. If reading a good book is more your style, mark the Durham Literature Festival in your diary. Every year, major writers come to Durham and read their work in venues around the city. Or for a taste of history, the Oriental Museum specialises in all the major civilisations of the East, from Egypt to Japan, while the Old Fulling Mill Museum nestles snugly at the foot of the Cathedral, telling the story of the city.
